It&rsquo;s colour can vary from red to greenish with some white spots. At the arm&#8217;s borders of the arms they have several tiny spikes which confer them a shape like a saw.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where does it live?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an endemic species of the Mediterranean sea, found between 1 and 50 meters on the leaves and between the rizomas of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cibsub.com\/bioespecie_en-posidonia_oceanica-27622\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em><\/a>. Sometimes they also have been found on sea weeds like incrustant rodoficeas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it feed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They invert their stomachs in order to digest the food they eat. Their diet consists of microorganisms, decaying seaweeds and small or dead invertebrates found on top of <em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do they reproduce?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Females take care of the eggs inside their body from spring to summer untill they hatch as completely formed starlets.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is a confusion possible?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It can be confused with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cibsub.com\/bioespecie_en-asterina_gibbosa-27615\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><em>Asterina gibbosa<\/em><\/a>, however they differ in size and colour. Confusions are also very common with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cibsub.cat\/bioespecie_en-asterina_phylactica-78237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Asterina phylactica<\/em><\/a>. This seastar, however shows in subtle way individual arms which separate from the main body. <em>Asterina pancerii<\/em>&#8216;s arms remain to the body&#8217;s pentagon and can&#8217;t be clearly individualized.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Curiosities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&middot; In the first stages of life they are all females.
