The shoots coming from the root are a few millimetres long and are segmented into regular pieces. Male and female flowers are formed in separate bundles. The fruits usually grow in pairs at the base of the bundle.<\/p>\n<p><br \/><strong>Where does it live?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A species typical of the infralittoral (always submerged), widely distributed in the Mediterranean Sea and in the NE Atlantic, from southern Spain to the Canary Islands. It is present in sandy-muddy soils in sheltered places from the surface down to about 10 metres. Locally it forms very extensive meadows together with <em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em> and <em>Zostera nolti<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it reproduce?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It produces flowersa which are inconspicuous and difficult to see among its long leaves. Plants spread by rhizome growth (underground stems) only on horizontal surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is a confusion possible?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the Mediterranean it could be confused with other aquatic plants such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cibsub.cat\/bioespecie_en-posidonia_oceanica-27622\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em><\/a> although the latter is larger and the leaves are considerably thicker. It is similar to the lawn of a sports field because its leaves are lengthened and pale green, almost transparent. They are narrow and form groups, with a basal pod and toothed edges that share a rhizome. They can do meadows.<\/span><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Where does it live?<br \/><\/span>On sandy soils, of up to 30 meters of depth. It stabilizes the substrate with its radical system and serves as a support for a great quantity of other algae, invertebrates and fishes. It is more resistant and tolerant to changes than\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cibsub.cat\/bioespecie_en-posidonia_oceanica-27622\" _mce_href=\"http:\/\/www.cibsub.cat\/bioespecie_en-posidonia_oceanica-27622\" mce_href=\"http:\/\/www.cibsub.cat\/bioespecie_en-posidonia_oceanica-27622\">\u00a0<\/a><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cibsub.cat\/bioespecie_en-posidonia_oceanica-27622\" _mce_href=\"http:\/\/www.cibsub.cat\/bioespecie_en-posidonia_oceanica-27622\" mce_href=\"http:\/\/www.cibsub.cat\/bioespecie_en-posidonia_oceanica-27622\">Posidonia <\/a><\/span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cibsub.cat\/bioespecie_en-posidonia_oceanica-27622\" _mce_href=\"http:\/\/www.cibsub.cat\/bioespecie_en-posidonia_oceanica-27622\" mce_href=\"http:\/\/www.cibsub.cat\/bioespecie_en-posidonia_oceanica-27622\">oceanica<\/a> <\/span>((L.) Delile, 1813)<\/span>, and this one is being substituted by\u00a0<span>Cymodocea\u00a0<\/span><span>nodosa\u00a0<span>(Ucria) Ascherson<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span>How does it reproduce?<br \/><\/span>It is everlasting specie which reproduces asexually and also sexually, by flowers. The masculine ones are red and have a long peduncle, whereas the feminine flowers are in the base of the leaves, protected by a pod.
