Brown algae, in the world of algae, are among those that offer the most color variations. This can vary from golden, through all shades of brown to black. They are non-vascular plants that photosynthesize. That is why they contain chlorophyll A and C (never B), together with other photosynthetic pigments such as carotene (which gives carrots their orange color, for example) or xanthophylls. These algae are very common in cold waters, where they reach impressive sizes (the best known example are Kelp forests). |
